Posted: 20 May 2009 08:49 AM PDT Imagine a dance music world where the most prominent DJs, record label owners, managers and industry heads all gather in one place to discuss the future of the scene. That's what Pete Tong envisaged when he launched Ibiza's International Music Summit (IMS) last year. The second annual IMS takes place from 27th - 29th May, and Beatportal has enlisted the services of British DJ and all round good guy Tom Middleton to blog live from the event, in order to share the most important discussion points raised during the panels with the worldwide dance music community. But why should you care about IMS? Pete Tong explains it all, right here.
New sheriff in town: Beatport hires Matt Adell Posted: 20 May 2009 04:21 AM PDT Back in 2002, a young club promoter and two resident DJs came together from different professional backgrounds to solve a problem. They had no idea that their solution to provide digital content to a world of DJs and fans of electronic music would grow so quickly into such a success story. Taking on this challenge meant that Beatport’s founders Eloy Lopez, Brad Roulier, and Jonas Tempel were taking part in modernizing the entire dance music retail industry, and this was undoubtedly their goal. Since those early days, these founders, along with a team of dedicated staff, have watched the company grow exponentially, and been humbled by the positive response they’ve received not just from their peers, but from the hundreds of thousands of customers spread out in almost every country in the world. Of course, that’s not to say that the growth of Beatport has been without its challenges. Quite the opposite is true in such a new industry; and operating any business at a high level will eventually lead to a natural transition towards professionalism. We are happy to announce that Beatport has reached that point…
Video: SMK ‘Sponsored By Destiny’ Posted: 19 May 2009 03:49 PM PDT The excellent video for SMK 'Sponsored By Destiny' is being featured over at our friends place R.fm. It's an animation that gives the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood a modern twist, with a melancholic minimal trance soundtrack to boot. Inspired by Röyksopp’s 'Remind Me' video, this film was created by Tomas Nilsson. The track was released with a minimal techno version by Radio Slave, a melodic trance remix by Donk Boys, and a glitchy tech house reworking by Jochen Trappe. Check them all out after the jump!
Movement interview: Wighnomy Brothers Posted: 15 May 2009 03:37 AM PDT The bottle of vodka was wiped out within two hours. It was destroyed by the Wighnomy Brothers, two gnome-like DJs with a penchant for drink, dance, and the joys of minimal house. It's the same story wherever Robag Wruhme and Sören Bodner play, but whilst their DJ booth escapades have been well captured in the past, little has been discussed about the studio technique and sound of the two revolutionaries who hail from Jena, a large university town on the river Saale. Ahead of their highly anticipated performance at Detroit's Movement festival later this month, Beatportal grabbed Robag Wruhme for a quick chat about their sound and took a look back at five essential Wighnomy Brothers tracks.
