Focus On: Boysnoize Records - Various Artists

Posted: 01 May 2009 08:17 AM PDT

With 11 loud and lairy indie dance/electro classics on one release, listening to 'Focus On: Boysnoize Records' is like having a large glass of hydrochloric acid tossed in your face. Ok maybe that doesn't sound like much fun, and that would be doing this marvelous release a major injustice as all of its tunes are a rip-roaring delight, but they do serve as a bleeding-great-big call to arms for anyone who likes their dance music noisy and rock-tinged.

Video: Dub Pistols ‘Back To Daylight’

Posted: 01 May 2009 03:27 AM PDT

I once witnessed Barry Ashworth from the Dub Pistols trying to make his way through Ibiza airport security in a wheelchair. It had been a long night, and Barry, in his inebriated state, thought it was a good idea to skip the queue by pretending to be disabled. It was a quintessential Ibiza moment: a trashed DJ with his mates sniggering behind sunglasses and brazen faces. Anyway, the dirty hip hop and breakbeat influenced grooves of Dub Pistols are back with a forthcoming new album 'Rum & Coke' (partying it seems is still high on the agenda), and here is the video for the LP's first single 'Back To Daylight'.

How Twitter tracklist app will change everything

Posted: 30 Apr 2009 01:05 PM PDT

Richie Hawtin's Twitter app announcement this morning hasn't had much time to properly sunk in yet, but already I've been having some major thoughts about how the broadcasting of DJ tracklists in real time will change everything. With Traktor quickly becoming the standard for electronic music DJs, the addition of a Twitter app will bring a level of transparency and fluidity to DJing in one fell software update that is likely to have a long-lasting impact on electronic music culture. Here are my initial thoughts on the pros and cons of this development.

WMC bomb here: Jamie Jones ‘Summertime’

Posted: 30 Apr 2009 10:38 AM PDT

We had the scoop on Jamie Jones' excellent soulful tech house track 'Summertime' pre WMC, and during the week it was one of the tracks that we heard everywhere in Miami. It is not however a mainroom banger, with its understated drums and soft melody being more suited for after hours gatherings and backroom joints. That of course, will be just fine for London rude boy Jamie Jones.
