Posted: 29 Apr 2009 07:51 AM PDT

In this scratchy video interview filmed backstage at Sanky's in Manchester, Carl Cox and Jon Rundell explain how they are big fans of New York's fast rising techno label Teggno Records. In the interview, Carl Cox says, "The true sound of techno that comes out of New York is, as far as I'm concerned, on that label", and goes on to explain how he's a big fan of the label, so much so, that he recently toured Mexico with Lance Blaise, Teggno's label head.

French house music is alive and kicking

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 04:29 AM PDT

This week saw a decent amount of quality house music come out of France, with both underground and established artists from the country providing all manner of different house grooves. None of the music is French house in the traditional Daft Punk electro-rock sense, but the beats do have a certain French sophistication and Parisian elegance to them. We decided to cherry pick five of the best French releases out this week in order to highlight five producers who are really doing their country proud. Vive la France!

Video: Steve Porter’s ‘Rap Chop’

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 05:11 PM PDT

Think those QVC-style infomercials for kitchen utensils are useless? Yeah we did too, until Steve Porter forwarded us this video mash up of a strange product called Slap Chop being turned into a scary Rap Chop. The track may be awful, but that's not the point - Steve only did it for a bit of comic relief (which is just what the doctor ordered). It also shows how with a bit of vocoder trickery, you can turn any recorded words into a useable vocal.

Video: Freeland ‘Under Control’

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 01:46 PM PDT

Adam Freeland has always been a free thinker. From his debut artist album 'Now & Then' back in 2003, the lyrics in his productions have carried a motif of political dissent and a distrust of capitalism, appropriately set against rock tinged breakbeats. So I'm very happy to learn that, despite a few more years under his belt and a move to Los Angeles, plus a transformation from solo breakbeat producer to producing a full electronica band, his punk rock rebel tendencies are still as strong as ever as proven by this new single 'Under Control'.

Depeche Mode Remix Contest in association with Native Instruments & JazzMutant

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 09:20 AM PDT

If it wasn't for Depeche Mode, electronic music might be very different. The English group's innovation in the studio, particularly with their use of samplers, has influenced electronic music in uncountable ways. The three pioneers of techno - Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins, regularly cited Depeche Mode as an influence when they were experimenting with Detroit techno in the mid 1980s, and Depeche Mode are often named by today's leading DJs and electronic music artists as key influencers. No other band of their stature has commissioned so many dance music producers to remix their work. The list so far includes Sasha, UNKLE, Paul van Dyk, Ricardo Villalobos, Booka Shade, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Michael Mayer, Rex The Dog, Ewan Pearson, Plastikman, Speedy J, Orbital, Blackstrobe, Underworld and Boys Noize. The band's connection to electronic music is more than just influence, it helped to give it a beating heart. That makes a Depeche Mode remix contest something special, and for the first time ever, the band have agreed to let the public remix one of their songs officially. Beatport is honoured to bring this unique opportunity to the electronic music community.
