Posted: 24 Apr 2009 03:19 AM PDT October's 'Say Again' was one of Ewan Pearson's favourite tracks from last year, and October's follow up on Ripperton's Perspectiv Records is quickly gaining similar reactions. The Bristol-based producer has seemingly developed a knack for haunting and twisted minimal techno that goes well beyond just using simple elements to reach the point of minimalism.

Posted: 23 Apr 2009 05:15 PM PDT Upon first listen of the Designer Drugs Remix of Annie’s infectious new single ‘Anthonio’ my immediate thought was that her voice sounded just like Stacey Q singing the 1986 synthpop hit ‘Two of Hearts’. I even made a note of it for when writing this review; so imagine my self-congratulations when, upon checking out her myspace, I find that she has a cover of the very same song in her player. Thankfully the similarities to Stacey Q end there.
Posted: 23 Apr 2009 04:01 PM PDT When I started listening to Aufgang 'Sonar', something inside me started crying. It was almost as if someone had peeled away my layers of skin, exposing me to the world. Electronic music doesn't often have the emotional intent and power of classical music, but 'Sonar' sure comes damn close.
Posted: 23 Apr 2009 02:15 PM PDT Boxcutter’s latest album on Planet Mu, ‘Arecibo Message’ has been described by many as his greatest and most intelligent body of work yet. ‘A Familiar Sound’ lifted straight off the album, and originally released on his own label Kinnego Records, see’s Barry Lynn opt for a more jazzy, off step vocal feel, a vibe which brings this Northern Irish producer into new territory.
James Zabiela finds his inner Joy Division Posted: 23 Apr 2009 12:13 PM PDT A happy experiment inspired by music history is a suitable explanation for how James Zabiela's new 'Darkness By Design' track came about. The British deck wizard created the post-punk sounding techno cut after being inspired by the 2007 Joy Division biopic film about Ian Curtis, the lead singer of the famous band. "I was really inspired by the film," he says, "My iPod is filled with Joy Division, Depeche Mode and Nirvana and I just wondered if I could put some of those elements into my own track."
Video: Luciano, Villalobos, Dice DJ on a mountain Posted: 23 Apr 2009 11:17 AM PDT As this video shows, dance music people are like cockroaches, able to colonise the most remote and inappropriate locations on Earth for a brief and colourful party. In this video, Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, and Loco Dice are DJing at 2300m (or 7500ft) up a mountain in the Swiss Alps. As they DJ, mountain paragliders zoom right over their heads much to the delight of the crowd. The best part? Ricardo is wearing ski clothes whilst he DJs. Watch this video on Beatportal
| Posted: 23 Apr 2009 10:56 AM PDT It was only two weeks ago that Defected Records launched their producer competition in conjunction with Beatport – with the enviable prize of the winning track being signed to Defected later this year as well as being professionally mixed down by The Shapeshifters. The response has been staggering. Currently over 1000 tracks have been submitted, with more than 5,000 people signing up within the first 5 days of the launch. There is a wealth of undiscovered dance music talent from around the globe out there. That said, with two weeks of the competition still remaining, there's still time to get involved either by entering a track or by rating and commenting on other people's tracks which could be hitting a dancefloor near you soon. | Posted: 23 Apr 2009 10:32 AM PDT Ever since Montero's 'Captain Hook' dropped on Renaissance in 2006 I've been a big fan of the Belfast duo's music. Their chunky progressive house cuts always wink at electro house but never fully embrace the brashness, and they always work on the floor. As such, Montero has become a firm favourite for DJs like James Zabiela (who included 'Captain Hook' on his famed 'Utilities' mix compilation), Sasha and Sander Kleinenberg. Their new 'Cause And Effect' EP on Ricky Stone's Flat Belly Recordings is another example of the kind of quality pumping house they've become accomplished at. |
