Keep an eye on Trendy Mullet

Posted: 15 Apr 2009 08:27 AM PDT

We love the name and the artwork of Trendy Mullet, the record label run by up and coming UK underground house duo The Quirk Burglars; and you have to admire the honesty on their Myspace page. "Trendy Mullet is a genre bending record label that sticks two fingers up to all the anal fuckers out there who follow passing fads because everyone else does! You don't have to be cool to like our music, your name doesn't have to be on the list! You're all invited!" they shout from their UK base, whilst presumably downing pints of proper English bitter. Of course, their name is all in good jest, and as the first Trendy Mullet release on Beatport shows, they're all about fun and quirky house vibes (check it in the player).

Posted: 15 Apr 2009 05:40 AM PDT

Miami's Winter Music Conference is probably the world's most important annual gathering of dance music enthusiasts, and as Britain's elected dance music ambassador Pete Tong is right at the top of party and DJ ladder. Pete kept a diary exclusively for Beatportal of his 2009 WMC trip which concludes his North American tour blog (it might be a bit late, but Pete is a very busy man!). Here's how WMC 2009 played out, through the eyes of Pete Tong.

Posted: 15 Apr 2009 03:28 AM PDT

As resident DJ of Cielo in New York and Pacha in Ibiza, Willie Graff has seen his profile rise steadily in house music circles in recent years (UK house pioneer Danny Rampling once named Willie Graff a future star in DJ Magazine). This production sees Graff team up with King Street regular Tuccillo for a peak time, funky house cut that winks cheekily at the filtered disco days.

User tip: Check out Beatluxe’s sample packs

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 05:10 PM PDT

Beatportal user Dirk Stolte emailed us from Germany to let us know that Beatluxe's new sample pack 'Minimalistech' is, like, the best thing since the invention of the drum machine. Well maybe not, but the sample pack is very useful, as he explains in his letter.

Want big room techno? Check Phunk Investigation

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 03:39 PM PDT

Big room techno seems to be a burgeoning movement at the moment and Phunk Investigation's album 'Outrage' shows why. With 14 tracks of no nonsense, DJ friendly techno produced by Italians Stefano Silvestri and Dino Maggiorana (the artists behind the 2001 house anthem 'Flawless' by The Ones'), 'Outrage' sounds like the love child of Popof and Mark Knight and its energy is highly infectious.

Philip Bader & Lexy launch Dantze label

Berlin DJs Philip Bader and Lexy have teamed up to launch a brand new label called Dantze, which from the first release, promises to be a home for more soulful minimal techno grooves. The label's first release is a wonky minimal two-tracker collaboration between Bader and fellow Stil Vor Talent artist Nicone, with Bader's vocals appearing on 'Spoony Talker' - listen to it in the player after the jump.

Weekend Weapons: Mr C

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 08:35 AM PDT

Clubland hero Mr. C was one of the co-founders of the recently defunct and much loved The End nightclub in London, which flew the flag for quality electronic music for 13 years before closing sadly in January. Since the late '80s, Mr. C has been involved heavily in the dance music scene, as a DJ, a record label owner, a promoter and at one point as the frontman for infamous acid house band The Shamen who delivered the classics 'Move Any Mountain' and 'Ebeneezer Goode'. Along with his Superfreq, Plink Plonk and Lo Voltage record labels, Mr. C has had a significant impact in the the London tech house and techno spheres. But after more than 20 years of causing waves in London, Mr. C is planning to move to Los Angeles in September. "It's time for a big change, I think I've done all I can in London and Europe," he says. Believe it or not, Mr. C is planning on getting into the movie industry and already has a few contracts reportedly in the works. He's also plotting a Superfreq invasion on US soil with club nights across the country. So if anything, we're likely to be seeing more of this larger-than-life character in the coming year. Mr. C kindly agreed to share with the Beatportal community his current top 3 dancefloor destroyers.
