| Who Taught You Math? - Robert Hood Posted: 08 Apr 2009 07:07 AM PDT Blasphemous this might be to fans of Robert Hood's distinct Detroit minimalist techno, but this remix of 'Who Taught You Math?' by Berlin-based producer Shonky does a fabulous job of making the 2002 record more friendly for today's house and techno swingers. |

Featuring a number of standout tracks from his much-celebrated Planet E Communications label, Carl Craig's Top 10 is full of forward-thinking techno grooves and deep electronic symposiums. |
| Posted: 07 Apr 2009 04:49 PM PDT London’s LD has been mastering records for some of the scene’s most influential producers down at the infamous Transition studios, and it is through his experiences of listening to some of the finest crafted dubstep sounds around that he has now managed to perfect his own unique style. His previous recordings with Kode 9 had leaned towards the funkier sounds coming out of urban London with '2 Bad' bringing the tempo right down and reaching out to the house crowd. |
| Tutorials: How to DJ using Ableton Live 8 Posted: 07 Apr 2009 02:15 PM PDT Remix Magazine hosted a series of DJ technology panels in Miami during WMC, including a series on how to DJ using version 8 of Ableton Live. Thankfully, they filmed the class just for us monkeys on the internets. Hosted by NYC electronic music production school Dubspot, the four part video is a helpful tutorial and covers all the basics including warping, editing audio files, mapping a MIDI controller and limiting on the Master Channel. | Why Innervisions is like a fine wine Posted: 07 Apr 2009 12:35 PM PDT Dixon's Innervisions label has such depth and clarity that if it was a wine, it would be considered a fine vivacious Bordeaux. This week, Innervisions poured forth two delicately balanced releases of flourishing deep house that will excite the palate of any discerning house music fan. The first comes from label mainstay Tokyo Black Star, who deliver their much-awaited album 'Black Ships', which we first heralded back in January with "the overall feeling of the album is one of connectivity, or rather the search for perpetual connectivity. Having seen the world getting smaller, Tokyo Black Star’s music and imagination seems to extend beyond the rim, into the universe. Like all good electronic music LPs, ‘Black Ship’ glides across an ocean affected by many different musical undercurrents." |
| The records that dominated WMC 2009 Posted: 07 Apr 2009 10:26 AM PDT It’s a wrap. We’ve survived another WMC, just. The Miami memories may be slightly hazy now, but through our foggy minds we managed to build two comprehensive charts of tracks that dominated this year’s conference. These are the cuts that we heard time and time again. Our Big Sounds For Big Floors chart is chockablock with epic ensembles that moved the Miami masses at festivals, large-scale beach parties and cavernous main rooms. Our Underground Anthems For 2009 chart focuses on the cuts that we heard at the afterhours parties, intimate gatherings and secret warehouse events during WMC. Together they represent the soundtrack of WMC 2009. Check out both charts after the jump! |
| Posted: 07 Apr 2009 10:04 AM PDT With a tip of the hat to classic Chicago house, Snuff Crew deliver a fantastic housey techno EP on Playhouse that will delight DJs both old and new. With three cuts of superbly crafted, percussive-driven techno, the EP manages to sound wholeheartedly from the early 90s, but also still sounds fresh at the same time. Wow, Playhouse saved a real beauty for their 150th release! |
| One to Watch: Iceland’s Oculus Posted: 07 Apr 2009 05:57 AM PDT Hailing from the tiny Icelandic town of Akureyri, the music of newcomer Oculus is starting to prick up the ears of some of techno's leading names including Alexi Delano, Laurent Garnier and Deadbeat, who are all supporting his first EP 'Awake' on Open Concept Recordings (listen to it in the player after the jump). We decided to grab the fast-rising Icelandic star to find out more about his upbringing, his studio techniques and his introductions to electronic music. |
| Posted: 06 Apr 2009 11:24 AM PDT Top Berlin-based producer Radio Slave recently attacked mp3 blogs, which he says is helping to destroy the scene. There are a number of illegal blogs out there that distribute dance music for free under the pretense that they are helping the original artist and record labels by "promoting" their music. But Radio Slave disagrees. "I'd just like to have a quick rant to all the people out there who think it's ok to share music without buying the proper legit versions. We [REKIDS] have been hit hard recently by this and I personally feel it's unfair to distribute stolen files, especially when the music isn't even commercially available," he said. |
