Video: Royksopp ‘Happy Up Here’

Beatport and Native Instruments are in the running again this year for the IDMAs, or International Dance Music Awards. Beatport won in two retailer categories last year and in 2006, and we'd like to continue our winning streak by asking you to vote for us. The awards ceremony takes place as part of the annual Winter Music Conference (WMC) held in Miami, Florida, long regarded as the industry’s and fans’ premier networking event for the dance music industry held in the United States. There are 49 categories which aim to award outstanding achievements to industry leaders, so if you love Beatport and NI, please give us your vote!

Betting on Breakspoll part 3: General Midi and Stereo:Type have a flutter

In our final series of features in the run up to this year’s annual breakbeat awards at Fabric in London, we talk to scene stalwarts General MIDI and one of this year's freshest acts, Stereo Type. General MIDI, who is also nominated for Best Breaks Artist in the BMAs, had a massive year with his ‘Milton’ release on Distinctive Records and will be playing at the awards show on February 26th. Stereo Type, meanwhile (the partnership between Ctrl Z’s Tommy Dash and Screwface), recently dropped their debut album on Hardcore Beats and have been tipped to be among the biggest production acts of 2009.

Urban Torque on clocking a century

Celebrated UK label Urban Torque commemorates its 100th release this month, having been pushing the groove train along a deep track since 2001. What started out as a London club night grew to transform into a successful and accomplished label, with names like Milton Jackson, Hernán Cattáneo, Sei A and Francois Dubois all gracing the imprint's catalogue. Today Beatportal sat down with label heads Jason Moore and Leigh Morgan to talk about the pitfalls and joys of running their successful imprint, and what big things are in store for Urban Torque in 2009.

WMC Track: Pascal FEOS & Heiko MSO ‘Luv’

Although still somewhere on the not-too-distant horizon, we can't help but turn our attentions to sunnier climes of the impending Miami WMC - the year's first major event on the dance music calendar. As part of the lead-up to the festivities, which officially take place this year between 24th - 28th March, Beatportal will be to gazing into our crystal 'rave' ball and be hazarding guesses as to which tracks will be smashing up the clubs, terraces and pool parties this year. Our first dose of hype-mongering concerns a duo that have been putting out tracks together for well over a decade and have returned with a beautifully rounded, melodic tech house number we just love to imagine hearing whilst being blanketed in UV rays.

Sonar 2009 headliners and line-up

Back in January Orbital were announced as the headliners of Barcelona's Sonar festival 2009, and now 1980s pop heroine Grace Jones, Ostgut Ton's Marcel Dettmann and Shed, Deadmau5, Martyn, Erol Alkan, Joker, Dorian Concept and Cardopusher have been added to the line-up. Ed Banger Records will also be doing a showcase, bringing with them SebastiAn, James Pants, Busy P and Breakbot.

Hot Knives - Slam

Slam's new 'Hot Knives' track ain't exactly intricate; but its unashamedly straight-forward approach to ruining a dancefloor will earn it many spins in the coming weeks. As a tool, it's about as honest and useful as a chimney sweep, guvnor.
