Posted: 30 Jan 2009 02:37 PM CST Swiss producer Agnès has been leading his country's deep house charge via his Sthlmaudio and 60sec Records imprints, and through his own productions that blend rich, dubby textures with jackin' roots. Also known under his Ray Valioso moniker, Agnès has released on Tsuba, Drumpoet Community and Plak, and last year saw him rework Dyed Soundorom's 'Tapioka' and Liapin's 'Redskin' into veritable dancefloor monsters. We decided to drop in on Agnes' mountain lair to see what secrets lie hiding in his DJ box.
Find dancefloor bombs with BeatDetect! Posted: 30 Jan 2009 12:47 PM CST Beatportal's newly launched BeatDetect section is now cooking nicely with hard-to-find dancefloor bombs being submitted by users, and the faithful Beatportal community helping out with IDs. If you have an elusive record you've yet to name, be sure to embed your web videos or upload an audio clip at: http://www.beatportal.com/beatdetect (It's also a useful spot to find good music, because only good music is worth ID'ing we think).
Posted: 30 Jan 2009 10:46 AM CST Commix have recently been quoted as saying that that current drum & bass climate is depressing, and that their tastes are leaning more towards techno and house artists like Ben Watt and Cobblestone Jazz. Taken from the latest Dat Music compilation on Soul:R, ‘Underwater Scene’ (track 19 in the player) is a clinical representation of the music and sounds that are influencing Commix whilst showing a new, more intelligent direction within the scene. It is perhaps the closest you’ll ever get to merging techno with drum & bass.
Orbital to headline Sonar 2009 and others Posted: 30 Jan 2009 10:07 AM CST Since British dance music legends Orbital announced back in November that they would be coming out of 'retirement' to headline The Big Chill festival, it seems the Hartnoll brothers have discovered a new appetite for live performance. Or they've been impressed with the demand (fees). This summer, Orbital will now take over a number of festivals across Europe including Rockness in Scotland on June 14th, Sonar in Barcelona (June 18th - 20th) and Global Gathering in England (July 24th - 25th), as well as perform at Manchester Academy (September 19th) and London's Brixton Academy on September 25th.
James Holden caught doing Ableton presets demo Posted: 30 Jan 2009 04:02 AM CST Renowned British producer James Holden gave a presentation in Anaheim, California, recently, demonstrating his favorite Ableton presets. Whilst the annual NAMM music tech trade show was taking place, Holden broke into a local school nearby and gave an off-site presentation.
Maggie - Collabs, Speedy J, Chris Liebing Posted: 29 Jan 2009 06:43 PM CST The great techno love affair between German DJ Chris Liebing and Dutch techno pioneer Speedy J continues with 'Maggie', one of the most powerful tools currently doing the rounds in techno clubs. 'Maggie' sounds like the name of cute girl, and indeed the 122 BPM rate of the track does suggest it could be more of a waltz than a fist pumper, but make no mistake, this is the perfect track to drop when you want to take your set balls to the wall.
