Telefon Tel Aviv’s Charlie Cooper passes away

Charlie Cooper III, one half of the Chicago-based electronic music duo Telefon Tel Aviv, passed away last Thursday. The group's third full length studio album 'Immolate Yourself' was released one day later on Ellen Allien's Bpitch Control. No details have been released of how Cooper died, but his lifelong friend and studio partner Joshua Eustis posted this heartfelt message on the group's Myspace page today:

Weekend Weapons…Seth Troxler

This week's Weekend Weapons spans the twinned techno cities of Berlin and Detroit by the way of the currently white hot Seth Troxler. Cast your mind back to the beginning of 2008 and Troxler was a relatively unknown force. With only a handful of releases under his belt for Esperanza and Beretta Grey, he began the year with a couple of notable appearances for the massive Spectral Sound imprint before really getting into his stride on the Valt Trax EP with Patrick Russell on Circus Company. The release featured a trio of brooding tech house cuts that began to give some indication towards the wild string of releases Troxler was about to embark on.

Beatport Music Awards 2009: nominees

The nominees for the Beatport Music Awards 2009, the annual awards that aim to recognize electronic music talent, have just been announced and voting is now open at: beatportal.com/awards/beatport-music-awards-2009 To keep the awards fair and relevant to the whole electronic music scene, the nominees were chosen based solely on unit sales on Beatport during 2008 and are broken down into separate genre categories. The public must now decide which artists and tracks deserve to be recognized by casting their vote. Here is the full list of nominees:

CR2 and Fedde Le Grande ‘Get This Feeling’ remix contest

Beatportal has teamed up with Cr2 Records to offer aspiring producers the chance to remix Fedde Le Grand’s ‘Get This Feeling’ and have their remixes released on the high profile imprint. Cr2 need four remixes from four different genres: house, electro house, tech house and techno, and a winner from each genre will be released on the label. The winners will also receive a $50 Beatport gift card and some Beatport goodies. As usual, the Beatport and Beatportal community will have the chance to vote for the best submitted remixes by 'spinning' their favorites. Click through for further details and prize information.

First impressions: Tokyo Black Star ‘Black Ships’

With one foot in Tokyo and the other in New York, and a debut album 'Black Ships' set for release at the end of March on Berlin's Innervisions, the work of Isao Kumano and Alex Prat aka Tokyo Black Star represents the collaborative modern world of electronic music. Beatportal had a sneaky first listen of 'Black Ships' today, and the overall feeling of the album is one of connectivity, or rather the search for perpetual connectivity. Having seen the world getting smaller, Tokyo Black Star's music and imagination seems to extend beyond the rim, into the universe.

Carl Cox on the joys of digital DJing

Australia's biggest selling tabloid, the Herald Sun, have conducted an intriguing video interview with DJ heavy weight Carl Cox. The British jock who was last year voted Mixmag's number 1 DJ of the past 25 years, took time to talk through his current set-up (based around Traktor Scratch Pro) and the reasons behind his transition to the all-digital platform. Josh Wink Essential Mix

The venerable DJ, producer and Ovum label boss Josh Wink shows how it's done on this week's Radio 1 Essential Mix. Never one to shy away from stylistic border crossings, this is the man who's been paving the way between the underground and the mainstream for over fifteen years, breaking boundaries with now legendary releases that include 'Don't Laugh' and 'Higher State of Consciousness'. Here on his Essential Mix Mr. Winkelman (did you know that's his real name?) whips up a selection of crowd pleasing tracks that are collectively further testament to his prowess behind the decks: Kerri Chandler, Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts, Thom Yorke as well as Shed and Martyn have found their way onto the tracklist in a mix that runs from house to dubstep and plenty in between to demonstrate just how versatile this veteran jock is.
