Video: Damian Lazarus throws himself off a balcony Posted: 05 Jun 2009 06:52 PM PDT Crosstown Rebels boss Damian Lazarus threw himself off a balcony in Los Angeles today for a "death defying stunt", in order to celebrate his 'Smoke The Monster Out' album launch party which is happening at Avalon in Hollywood tomorrow night. As this video shows, it's unclear if Lazo survived. "If this doesn't work, I just want to say it's been fantastic hanging out with you doing all the stuff that we do together. If it doesn't work I just want to say thank you for everything and just keep listening," said Damian Lazarus before jumping off the ledge. Just before the video stops you can see Lazarus plunging at considerable speed before disappearing over the edge. Watch this video on Beatportal
The deceptive darkness of blue-eyed Kiki Posted: 05 Jun 2009 11:46 AM PDT Joakim Ijäs is a liar. His soft voice, nervous laugh, mild manners, fair complexion, and clean style is just a trick. Don't believe the polite nice boy from Finland act. If you go and see him play in a club you will only find a techno doom monger. Kiki might sound like a cute hamster, but there is nothing except dark skies in his blue eyes. Ijäs has a good excuse for the blackness that surrounds him (and his MySpace). "Finland is such a dark and depressing place. The Finnish are known for being depressed. It's one of the only countries in the world where tracks in a minor chord top the charts," he says, in his punctuated English.
Minimal to multistep: October interview Posted: 04 Jun 2009 12:30 PM PDT October fired up the minimal scene in 2008. The Bristol-based producer helped to redefine the sound with productions that defied the standard conventions that the minimal genre has sometimes been lumbered with. His music won him fans across the globe including Steve Bug, who featured October's ‘Invitation’ on his 'Bugnology 3' mix compilation. Not one for stagnation, October’s productions have gradually progressed from broken beat, to minimal, through to the dub-techno sound associated with his latest track ‘Euro Dance Hit’, which features elements of both the Bristol and Berlin sounds. Having released most of his work on his own Caravan imprint, October this month releases the aptly titled ‘Recession’ mix; a compilation of odd-ball techno and glitch minimal that makes for very interesting listening. Shockingly, the mix is built mainly from tracks that were rejected by record labels for being "too weird, and not dancefloor enough". We caught up with October to find out more about his unique take on electronic music, and learnt about 'multi-step' and 'stoner techno'.
