Minimal to multistep: October interview

Posted: 04 Jun 2009 12:30 PM PDT

October fired up the minimal scene in 2008. The Bristol-based producer helped to redefine the sound with productions that defied the standard conventions that the minimal genre has sometimes been lumbered with. His music won him fans across the globe including Steve Bug, who featured October's ‘Invitation’ on his 'Bugnology 3' mix compilation. Not one for stagnation, October’s productions have gradually progressed from broken beat, to minimal, through to the dub-techno sound associated with his latest track ‘Euro Dance Hit’, which features elements of both the Bristol and Berlin sounds. Having released most of his work on his own Caravan imprint, October this month releases the aptly titled ‘Recession’ mix; a compilation of odd-ball techno and glitch minimal that makes for very interesting listening. Shockingly, the mix is built mainly from tracks that were rejected by record labels for being "too weird, and not dancefloor enough". We caught up with October to find out more about his unique take on electronic music, and learnt about 'multi-step' and 'stoner techno'.
