Kerri Chandler plans 3D holograms for DJ sets

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 04:40 PM PDT

US deep house hero Kerri Chandler has always been the experimental type, and Southport Weekender in Britain has always been there with open arms welcoming his creativity to the DJ booth. At the 2006 event, Chandler played the keys to 'Bar A Thym' and some of his other hits using a laser string (see the video after the jump). Last year he went one better and shocked the crowd by mixing flawlessly using only three consecutive reel-to-reels. And just when you thought you had seen it all, Kerri Chandler has now announced that he plans to incorporate 3D virtual projections of singers performing the exact tunes as he plays them at this year's Weekender. That's right. Holograms of the actual original vocalists in the DJ booth, singing along to the songs that he plays. Wow.

Weekend Weapons: Jody Wisternoff

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 01:04 PM PDT

From breaking through into the DMC World DJ championships as a finalist in 1986 at the tender age of 13, Jody Wisternoff has been a constant fixture in dance music. In the early '90s he toured under the act Sub Love, which at one point was one of the biggest draws on the UK rave circuit. In 1994 he met Bristol-based DJ Nick Warren, and their partnership led to the creation of one of progressive house's most successful double acts Way Out West. Way Out West are one of the few acts in prog to have been signed to a major label - the duo even performed their hit single 'The Gift' on famous British music chart show Top Of The Pops and toured with Faithless, and after 16 years of friendship the pair are poised to release their fourth studio album 'We Are Machine'. Beyond Way Out West, both Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren have successful solo careers as DJs and producers. Jody Wisternoff kindly revealed to Beatportal his big three records of the moment for this week's Weekend Weapons.

All you need is a kick drum and a piano

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 11:21 AM PDT

What does it take to make a club hit these days? Martin Eyerer and Benno Blome are hoping a kick drum and a piano is all you need, as demonstrated by their bravely simple new tool 'Pianoroll'. Over nine minutes the pair layer an improvisational jazzy piano session over a never-ending kick drum and bass combo. There's no breakdown, no build up, no FX, no hi hats - nothing. Diddly squat. So have they gone completely mad, or are they in fact geniuses?

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 09:39 AM PDT

There's something about Chelonis R. Jones' voice that suits dark house music, and as such, his music is well crafted for Marc Romboy's Systematic Recordings and the likes of Get Physical. 'Pompadour' is the second single to be released from Chelonis R. Jones album 'Chatterton', and is one of the LP's more epic, end-of-the-night tracks.

Beatport presents Depeche Mode Remix Contest in association with Native Instruments & JazzMutant

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 09:20 AM PDT

If it wasn't for Depeche Mode, electronic music might be very different. The English group's innovation in the studio, particularly with their use of samplers, has influenced electronic music in uncountable ways. The three pioneers of techno - Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins, regularly cited Depeche Mode as an influence when they were experimenting with Detroit techno in the mid 1980s, and Depeche Mode are often named by today's leading DJs and electronic music artists as key influencers. No other band of their stature has commissioned so many dance music producers to remix their work. The list so far includes Sasha, UNKLE, Paul van Dyk, Ricardo Villalobos, Booka Shade, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Michael Mayer, Rex The Dog, Ewan Pearson, Plastikman, Speedy J, Orbital, Blackstrobe, Underworld and Boys Noize. The band's connection to electronic music is more than just influence, it helped to give it a beating heart. That makes a Depeche Mode remix contest something special, and for the first time ever, the band have agreed to let the public remix one of their songs officially. Beatport is honoured to bring this unique opportunity to the electronic music community.
