Posted: 21 Apr 2009 04:11 PM PDT

Interview: Markus Schulz’ progression

Posted: 21 Apr 2009 12:34 PM PDT

If Markus Schulz were an athlete, he'd be a gold medalist. In the past 12 months, the German-born, US-raised trance phenomenon has built himself an impressive list of accolades that includes landing at No.8 in DJ Magazine's Top 100 DJs poll, being awarded Best American DJ in the IDMAs, and being voted Best International Resident by Londoners for his residency at The Gallery. He is not however one to sit on his laurels. Asides from running his hugely successful Global DJ Broadcast radio show that reaches millions each week, he recently dropped his new mix album 'Toronto 09', and this May sees the return of his Dakota alias, which is his outlet for darker, deeper and more progressive sounds. We caught up with Markus Schulz to find out more about his Dakota plans, how he feels about winning so many awards, and why he thinks he's something of a trance underdog. He was also kind enough to put together a Top 10 DJ chart for us. Check it all out after the jump!

Dennis Ferrer WMC bomb here

Posted: 21 Apr 2009 10:14 AM PDT

If you saw Dennis Ferrer spin at WMC last month in Miami, chances are you heard his 'Sinfonia Della Notte', a gloriously happy vocal house record. With Latin influences, uplifting piano stabs, techno-influenced beats and funky synth lines, 'Sinfonia Della Notte' is typical crossover hit stuff from Ferrer. This will be huge in Ibiza this year, because it's the perfect summer anthem.

Weekend Weapons: Kevin Saunderson

Posted: 21 Apr 2009 08:04 AM PDT

Detroit techno innovator Kevin Saunderson has had a huge impact on techno and dance music. Along with his friends Juan Atkins and Derrick May, Saunderson is widely recognized as one of the originators of techno having experimented with the music in the early and mid 1980s. Under his chart topping group Inner City, Kevin Saunderson had 12 Top 40 hits in the UK, and under his many aliases which includes E-Dancer, Reese Project, Tronikhouse, The Elevator and Kreem, Saunderson has built a reputation for being one of the most respected producers in techno. His label KMS Records is used as a breeding ground for new talent, and he also uses it to release his own productions, most notably the recent 'History Elevate' series that sees new reinterpretations of his most famous work by esteemed producers (check 'History Elevate 5' in the player). In June, Saunderson will be returning with his definitive remix compilation of the same name and this time the Wee Papa Girl Rappers, Cerrone, Pet Shop Boys, Hercules And Love Affair, The Presets, Octave One, Simian Mobile Disco, Inner City, Carl Craig, Mike Shannon and Luciano feature. Beyond production and running a label, Kevin Saunderson is also a talented DJ who has been rocking mainrooms, festivals and warehouses for over 20 years. Yet despite the history, Kevin Saunderson is not the type of DJ to release retrospective compilations of yesteryear anthems and as such his sets are always forward-thinking, as his picks for this week's Weekend Weapons proves. Here's Kevin Saunderson's Top 3 cuts of the moment.

Posted: 21 Apr 2009 06:24 AM PDT

Back in February 2008, Logiztik Sounds aka Uruguay-based producer Nicolas Silvano won our Sasha remix contest with an intricate and uplifting version of 'Mongoose'. Since then, Logiztik Sounds has been busy in the studio perfecting his craft, and he has managed to build himself a reputable profile in the progressive house sphere as defined by his recent run of releases on Little Mountain Recordings, Boz Boz, Proton Music and Vapour. He is also one of the only DJs to have had over 1000 listeners tune into his mix on Proton Radio. Logiztik Sounds' latest cut 'The Light', which was produced alongside his Uruguay-based partner Audiobill, might finally see him reach a tipping point in terms of recognition.

Beat That Bitch - Johnny Dangerous

Posted: 20 Apr 2009 05:15 PM PDT

Johnny Dangerous' 'Beat That Bitch' has been re-released many times since it first came out on white label in the early 1990s, with Mr. V's 2006 remixes probably having had the most impact. The track even made it onto Pete Tong's much heralded but now defunct FFRR label back in 1998. Supernova's new pair of driving minimal electro-tech remixes however differ wildly from all of the other remakes.

Zodiac Cartel gives DJs an evil excuse

Posted: 20 Apr 2009 03:15 PM PDT

Following our '10 excuses to avoid DJ requests' post which attempted to provide useful lines for DJs wishing to avoid requests from annoying punters without resorting to violence, Zodiac Cartel has seemingly come up with his own evil musical double entendre for DJs. 'We Don't Play That' has the added benefit of being an absolutely rip-roaring, in-your-face electro house cut, so when your hands are tied dropping this track should hopefully still hit the message home - it's the musical equivalent of a big fat 'F*** Off!' or a fricking laser beam in the face. Such evilness from the DJ booth obviously won't bring you any more fans, but as a secretive supervillan of the DJ world creating an army of aggressive electro house followers is one of the aims of the General Zod-loving producer.

MDR5 - Norman Nodge

Posted: 20 Apr 2009 01:32 PM PDT

Stark forward thinking techno and minimal isn't the kind of sound you'd expect from a lawyer and devout family man, but Norman Nodge finds himself back once again on fellow Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann's self-titled record label. Following his 2007 'NN' EP, which combined cold basslines with simple techno drums and bleepy minimal slews, the Berghain-affiliated producer's 'MDR 5' follows with subtly evolving techno soundscapes and meticulous, repetitive, stark beats.
