WMC Track: 2000 And One ‘Dat Na Poku’ Posted: 11 Mar 2009 06:31 AM PDT Dutch star 2000 And One delivered an excellent album 'Heritage' recently, as all eight tracks were focused solely on the dancefloor and designed for club destruction. Out of all the tracks on the album, the chunky house grooves of 'Dat Na Poku' is most likely destined for WMC greatness as it's an incredibly satisfying mid-set roller that revels in its subtle loop-centric arrangement.
Posted: 11 Mar 2009 02:53 AM PDT Conservative British broadsheet The Daily Telegraph have printed a slightly cringe-worthy but well meaning article discussing the rise of pretentiousness within modern electronic music. Far from taking a dim view on such an assertion however, columnist Edmund Conway concludes that after years of disparaging frowns from the mainstream towards its oft-dismissed musical cousin, dance music is now a complex and "sophisticated" beast that has as much to do with Steve Reich and Phillip Glass as it does with sweaty nightclubs. The mainstream British press' take on electronic music has often been derided within the electronic music community as being behind the times or hideously out of touch, casting off the genre as 'dead' and then gleefully singing its praises once it was perceived to be back in fashion.
Is ‘It Takes Two’ the new Amen break? Posted: 10 Mar 2009 06:56 PM PDT Following on from the facinating video we hosted last week in which Nate Harrison examined the collosal impact of the 'Amen' break upon popular music, we decided to do a bit of our own breakbeat-driven analysis. We have noticed that there appears to be a growing trend centered around a break that will most readily be recognizable from Rob Base and DJ Ez-Rock's 1988 classic 'It Takes Two'. Unsurprisingly, their sample was lifted from a 1969 James Brown produced track by Lyn Collins entitled 'Think (About It)' which featured the distinctive "Woah! Yeah!" as screamed by Brown. In fact the track was arguably first sampled by Roxanne Shante in the same year as 'It Takes Two' on the less-famous 'Roxanne's On A Roll'.
DJ Competition: Warm up for Dubfire at WMC Posted: 10 Mar 2009 03:54 PM PDT Today venerable techno spinner Dubfire has launched a DJ competition for Miami's forthcoming WMC. "Every year I struggle to find a DJ to play the opener of my party as the guys I book I normally want to showcase at the peak hours," Ali Shirazinia aka Dubfire told me. "So I want to give a SCI-TEC fan the chance to open the room and showcase their talents, in the hopes that maybe it will inspire them to pursue a career in music." If you are in Miami for WMC and would like to play the opening DJ set at Dubfire's record label party on Wednesday 25th March at Kore Ultra Lounge, find out how to enter after the jump.
Posted: 10 Mar 2009 02:34 PM PDT Swiss electro house superstar EDX has been ripping up dancefloors left, right and center with remixes of tunes like Kaskade's 'Angel on My Shoulder', this winter's recent feel good house hit, 'What a Wonderful World' from Axwell, Bob Sinclar and Ron Caroll, and releases on quality imprints like Toolroom, Defected, PinkStar Records and Sirup Records. He's also been nominated for a Beatport Music Award, so we figured it was about time to catch up with this mysterious up and comer and find out more about his path into dance music and DJing.
Video: Yet another Daft Punk rip off Posted: 10 Mar 2009 11:22 AM PDT Here's yet another Daft Punk rip off. The French duo's track 'Veridis Quo' has now been lazily used as a backing song for hip hop/r&b singer Jazmine Sullivan to croon over. Unlike Kanye West's 'Harder Better Faster Stronger' sampling though, 'Veridis Quo' plays out in its full entirety. Watch this video on Beatportal
Posted: 10 Mar 2009 07:22 AM PDT Sharam Jey's new video for 'Monday Morning', with LouLou Players featuring Princess Superstar, looks like about as much fun as a barrel of monkeys. Whip cream, inflatable pool toys, animal masks and fireworks take leading roles in this fun and irreverent video, and might just inspire some new party games. Watch this video on Beatportal
