Posted: 14 Oct 2008 08:37 PM CDT Weekend Weapons is a new weekly feature in which we shamelessly beg the top tier of the world's DJ'ing elite to reveal their top 3 tracks from their weekend. Widely considered to be among the most talented and influential DJs to recently emerge, we felt it fitting to ask Innervisions taste-maker Dixon to kick things off with his deadly trio. His gigs last weekend saw him hit Tape in Berlin as part of the Popkomm event, travel to Portugal to play Lux in Lisbon and round off the weekend in Spain with a set at Fabrik in Madrid. Here's Dixon's Top 3 Weekend Weapons, in his own words.
Posted: 14 Oct 2008 08:00 PM CDT Now that we’ve tackled the essentials of compression and delay, we’ll dig a bit deeper into another indispensable producer’s tool: reverberation. Reverberation – or "reverb", for short – is an effect that emulates the actual acoustic properties of a given space, either real or imagined. I’d even venture a guess that many - if not all - of your favorite tracks would sound quite different if the reverb was removed from their mixes. So with that in mind, we’re going to take a closer look at the specifics.

‘Don’t Know Why’ - Bimbo Jones Posted: 14 Oct 2008 12:25 PM CDT Before you write off Bimbo Jones as just another commercial act (their Eurythmics-esque first single 'And I Try' was the No. 1 club track in the country last week, according to Billboard), consider this: Bimbo vocalist Katherine Ellis has flexed her impressive pipes for everyone from Meat Katie, to Superchumbo, to Mark Knight. She sounds like Moloko’s ravishingly quirky Roisin Murphy one minute, and the grand dame herself, Annie Lennox, the next. Next to Jennifer Hudson, she might be the biggest and most exciting voice to release music this fall.
Posted: 14 Oct 2008 05:48 AM CDT Greek progressive Superstar Kosmas Epsilon rarely disappoints when it comes to signing new tracks for his own label Epsilon Trax.
Resensed Part Two (Remixes) - The Timewriter & Various Artists Posted: 14 Oct 2008 01:12 AM CDT 'Resensed Part 2' is the second installment of a collection of remixes created from the original productions of Jean Frank Cochois aka The Timewriter.
Steinberg releases Cubase Essential 4.5 Posted: 13 Oct 2008 10:00 PM CDT Hot on the heels of last month’s Cubase 4.5 update, Steinberg just announced a similar upgrade for its little brother, Cubase Essential. The downloadable Cubase Essential 4.5 update shares most of the same new features as the full version, just scaled back a bit for the entry-level edition.
Drumcode Tour: Running on fumes in Miami Posted: 13 Oct 2008 09:11 PM CDT Adam Beyer’s leg is shaking at the speed of a wagging dog’s tail. “It’s time to go,” he says, standing up. At 6’ 6”, this Swedish techno DJ’s desire to remain inconspicuous is futile; from the other side of this small nightclub in Miami, Florida, his trademark shaven head can easily be spotted. An excited nerdy-looking 20-something comes bounding up with a huge smile on his face. “Hey Adam! Can I have a photo?” shouts the kid. Adam obliges with a polite smile. Secretly, I know that all Adam wants to do is sleep, because I feel the same way too.
Genrecast: Chill Out 05 - Beatport Posted: 13 Oct 2008 08:00 PM CDT For this week's installment of the Chill Out Genrecast, we set it off with tracks from Mo' Horizons, Konferenz, Mr. Scruff, Compost, Futuristica Music and more. Similar to the Beatport Burners, Genrecasts are enhanced podcasts featuring the best new releases linked directly for download from Beatport. The Genrecast is an 'enhanced' podcast, which means each track in the mix has a track mark and shows the release artwork, so when you listen to it in iTunes or on your iPod you'll be able to skip through tracks in the mix, see the cover art of each release and click through to Beatport to buy the release. It's the easiest way for DJs to do record shopping!
My technical set-up: Dasha Rush Posted: 13 Oct 2008 06:41 PM CDT French/Russian DJ and producer Dasha Rush runs Fullpanda Records and releases music that is a hybrid of techno, electro and minimal. She recently spoke to Germany's De:Bug magazine about her technical set up. If you're interested in Dasha Rush's style of music, check out the player after the jump.
Posted: 13 Oct 2008 04:12 PM CDT Wrapping up the summer season, Jeff Mills and Ben Watt are among the attractions at the infamous We Love... closing fiesta. We Love... Godfather of the Detroit techno sound Jeff Mills, explains his deep deep love for music, while Ben Watt discusses the niche and obscurity of his own house sound.
Unreleased Live Tracks - LA Synthesis Posted: 13 Oct 2008 11:23 AM CDT LA Synthesis, originally from Liverpool and Birmingham, formed in South London in 1992. With releases on Evolution/Universal Language, A13 and Mr. C´s Plink Plonk label, Anthony Gallagher and Carl Grant have dropped several timeless classics, which for me had even more impact than the works of The Black Dog.
Posted: 13 Oct 2008 02:22 AM CDT As DJ Hype will tell you, it isn’t True Playaz anymore; those days are fully behind them. It’s now a new breed of drum & bass; fresh blood with bigger basslines and killer hooks. Playaz, the new label from Hype, has already played host to the colossal ‘Machete’ by DJ Hazard, and this tune is destined to be equally as large.
‘New Horizon’ - Move D & Benjamin Brunn Posted: 12 Oct 2008 05:59 PM CDT Move D and Benjamin Brunn's 'Songs From The Beehive' is firmly in the running as one of the top techno albums of the year, and here the pair follow up with more rich deepness on Hamburg's excellent Smallville Records. Bringing the best out of Move D's veteran experience and Brunn's lush production prowess, all three tracks here investigate the murky hinterland between home-listening abstraction and intuitive four-to-the-floor beats.
Video: Adam Beyer’s top tracks Posted: 12 Oct 2008 07:50 AM CDT Beatportal forced Swedish techno DJ Adam Beyer to get his laptop out and pick his top tracks of the moment exclusively for you guys. After going through his upfront inbox, Adam chose four records as his current big tracks, and then he played and dissected each one for us on camera.
Interview: We call it ‘Si Begg’ house Posted: 12 Oct 2008 02:15 AM CDT “I make music with my computer and other electronic devices. Sometimes it sounds nice, sometimes it is unpleasant and mildly grating.” So declares a simple two-line sentence on Si Begg’s MySpace site – and that’s it. Nothing more. He’s apparently content to let the music on the site speak for itself, which it does. It speaks volumes, as does the back catalogue of one of electronic music’s most creative, innovative, truly consistent, and genre-twisting boffins, over a career spanning 20 years.
Drumcode Tour pushes into the red in Toronto Posted: 12 Oct 2008 01:44 AM CDT “I used to play the drums when I was a kid and I’ve always been fascinated by drums,” said Adam Beyer before last night’s gig at Circa club in Toronto. “I like loud things. When I was a kid I used to run around hitting things and everywhere I went I tried to make as much noise as possible. “I was the loudest kid in the classroom; although I have calmed down a lot now.” But has he? The music was so loud in the DJ booth when Adam started his set at 2am, that for shits and giggles, I downloaded an app from the iPhone’s app store called Decibel Meter.
Posted: 11 Oct 2008 06:35 PM CDT UK based Floorplay cleverly maneuvered the licensing of the Golden Girls classic 'Kinetic', made famous by the Orbital remix, which was originally released on R&S Records in 1992. The Prok & Fitch boys from Brighton were commissioned for the remix project after causing quite a stir with their recent mixes on Stealth and Subversive.
Drumcode Tour: Chicken wings and gadgets in Toronto Posted: 11 Oct 2008 04:58 AM CDT “Are you a wings man?” asks Adam Beyer on the plane over from New York to Toronto. Today’s trip is only a 70 minute hop, which in the world of DJ travel, is a cool breeze. “You know, chicken wings? Whenever I come to the States, I have to get chicken wings. Pizza too. Eating the specialties of a region is part of the fun of traveling,” he says, grinning.
Posted: 11 Oct 2008 02:33 AM CDT Adam Beyer and Joel Mull are universes away from the DJ that played at your school disco – they don’t wear flannel shirts or moustaches – but that didn’t stop a girl last night at Cielo from handing them a napkin in their middle of their set with a scribbled message asking for a shout out for her mate. Er…sorry love, they don’t do ‘shout outs’.
