Podcast | Genrecast: House 03 - Beatport

Posted: 04 Aug 2008 10:00 PM CDT

If Beatport Burners are a weekly staple in your musical diet, then your ears are in for a treat. Beatportal is now launching four -- count 'em four -- new podcasts on a biweekly basis, with genres spanning house, trance, drum and bass, and chill out. Similar to the Beatport Burners, Genrecasts are enhanced podcasts featuring the best new releases linked directly for download from Beatport. This week's House Genrecast podcast features Jon Cutler feat. E-Man, Leoesco (Aka DJ Leo), Gramatik, a Prok & Fitch Remix of Cevin Fisher feat. Loleatta Holloway, Tommy Boy Records, and many more. The Genrecast is an 'enhanced' podcast, which means each track in the mix has a track mark and shows the release artwork, meaning when you listen to it in iTunes or your iPod you'll be able to skip through tracks in the mix, see the cover art of each release and you're able to click through to Beatport should you wish to buy the release. It's the easiest way for DJs to do record shopping! We will be bringing you the best new releases out on Beatport of each genre, so check back soon and often for the best tracks. Click through for the first house installment of 15 of the hottest new releases.

News | Drum and Bass goes electro house

Posted: 04 Aug 2008 08:52 PM CDT

Drum & bass is renowned for being influenced by other contemporary genres, borrowing pieces from other musical works and leaning heavily into different scenes. More recently there has been a trend of merging drum & bass and electro house. DJ Fresh’s most recent offering for the summer, ‘Gold Dust’ was produced with this intention in mind.

News | Beatport Lollapalooza afterparty gets shut down by Chicago authorities

Posted: 04 Aug 2008 07:32 PM CDT

This past weekend Beatport teamed up with Perry Farrell and planned to host a Lollapalooza afterparty that was meant to be big. A little too big, perhaps. With Deadmau5, Perry and others set to kill it, complete with Belvedere vodka as a sponsor, word spread that this was going to be the place to be and it soon burgeoned to catch the attention of the authorities. Word spread, and with the hype came a quagmire of bureaucratic red tape. The statement from Beatport representatives below summarizes the details of where and how the events got snagged.

How many great European techno festivals are out there? One has to keep asking, as news of yet another is unleashed. c/o pop takes place for its fifth annum in Cologne, Germany and will feature a whole rambunctious and lovely slew of artists from the 13th through to the 17th this month. 2008 will be the second year of the "Europareise" project, an international summit meeting of European festival organizers sponsored by the Federal Cultural Foundation, and of the "Asia-Pacific Platter", an inter-cultural exchange programme hosted by the Goethe-Institut to promote cooperation between electronic musicians from Germany, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

News | Are we all born to dance?

Posted: 04 Aug 2008 02:39 PM CDT

Some say dancing is the human mating ritual, the homo sapien equivalent of birds tweeting sweet songs to each other or two butterflies flutering around each other in harmonious synchronization. If that's the case then the need to dance and dancing skills should come from deep within ourselves, as they're part of our soul and part of the justification for our existence, right? This video, which shows a little boy of about two-years-old dancing may help answer that very question. Babies copying their parents is nothing new - learning fast is part of the evolution of human survival - but when the video reaches 0.20 seconds the baby does a dance move which is simply too perfect to suggest it was mimicking its parents. It's as if the music simply caused the baby to dance in that particular way.

News | Korg DS-10 now available in Japan

Posted: 04 Aug 2008 12:40 AM CDT

I don't know if small is always good, but it seems quite apparent that we tend to prefer many things smaller over here in Japan. As we have covered on Beatportal before, Korg has developed a palm-sized synth that you can play, program and record on a portable game machine Nintendo DS. The product was first exhibited at Musikmesse 2008 in March, and finally launched only in Japan about a week ago.

News | Quivver goes to Hollywood

Posted: 02 Aug 2008 09:50 PM CDT

John Graham, aka Quivver, appears to be a very busy man. With genre-bending debut CD 'Dirty Nails And Vapour Trails' just released and European, North and South American tour dates in the mix, this influential DJ also has a rank of #21 on thedjlist.com at the time of this writing. Along with the music industry, Hollywood has seemingly gotten its clutches into this accomplished DJ with a track called 'Hybrid' that's to be used in the upcoming Frank Miller film, "The Spirit". Co-produced and with lyrics by John Graham, the track is the theme song to the movie and is set to be used in the trailer. And apparently there's more in the realm of film scheduled for Graham, as another studio project has him composing for a 2009 Tony Scott film “The Taking of the Pelham 123” starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta. Not too shabby! Click through for a tracklist of 'Dirty Nails And Vapour Trails', his remaining tour dates, and a video of Quivver in action.
