Posted: 17 Dec 2008 03:37 PM CST Reboot is one of the most promising new producers to the minimal scene with standout releases on Cadenza, Raum...Musik and Moon Harbour and here he lends his talented remixing hands to Timos' 'Vendor'. Reboot's raw evolving musical delight is pure dancefloor gold.
Posted: 17 Dec 2008 01:23 PM CST Back in 1993 Rennie Pilgrem set up the now infamous Thursday Club Recordings (TCR), and is credited for almost single-handedly creating the nu skool breaks scene and spawning the careers of Adam Freeland and The Plump DJs to name but a few. Commonly referred to as the ‘Godfather of Breakbeat’ Rennie Pilgrem releases his new album ‘Skin’ this week on Beatport and talks to Beatportal about the 15 years of service TCR has provided to the music industry.
Posted: 17 Dec 2008 11:00 AM CST The irrefutable king of the deep house revival this year was David Moufang, aka Move D. As a producer Move D has been steadily releasing records since the early nineties, but in 2008 the sonic niche that he has been carefully cultivating mutated into the 'sound of now' - he's our deep house artist of the year. "It's all about the timing, " confirmed Move D. "You do your thing and eventually this will fall in synchronicity with what's happening in the scene and what people are into musically."
Posted: 17 Dec 2008 06:14 AM CST The Minus-supported Paco Osuna makes the smallest of edits to Gimikk 'Dancing On The Stars', but the affect is sublime. For those of you that don't know, Gimikk is the brain child Daniel Sanchez and E-Contact, the former having given 50% to Kabale Und Liebe's 'Mumbling Yeah' tech house anthem from 2007.
Posted: 16 Dec 2008 11:52 PM CST Although Kompakt has been markedly quieter in 2008 than previous years they've had their share of gems, notably in the form of Matias Aguayo's 'Minimal' and its excellent DJ Koze remix. This follow-up might not have quite the same far reaching appeal, but for fans of the Aguayo's taut narco-disco, it's another treat.
Everyone’s Got To Make A Living - Dances with White Girls Posted: 16 Dec 2008 07:34 PM CST Standout track from Dances with White Girls' new EP on The Rapture’s new imprint ‘Throne of Blood’ sees the use of the iconic sample from the 20th Century Band’s ‘Heaven and Hell is on Earth’ track. Most commonly associated with J-Lo’s ‘Jenny on the Block’ or more recently Paul Kalkbrenner’s ‘Gebrunn Gebrunn’, the lyrics, “Men go working, some go stealing, everyone's got to make a living” are looped around a high-octane, upbeat, jackin’ house beat.
Posted: 16 Dec 2008 01:00 PM CST Trance as a genre gets an unfair amount of criticism, and much of that is to do with ignorance: it's all giant breakdowns, obvious chord changes, cheesy vocals and DJs with a 'van' in their name, isn't it? That's the cliché. But in 2008 there were a number of trance producers who proved that the genre could evolve into new and exciting sounds, whilst still retaining the core element of trance that its followers find so intoxicating: hypnotism. German DJ Martin Roth did it better than most, and that's why he's our top trance artist of the year.
