Posted: 16 Dec 2008 01:00 PM CST Trance as a genre gets an unfair amount of criticism, and much of that is to do with ignorance: it's all giant breakdowns, obvious chord changes, cheesy vocals and DJs with a 'van' in their name, isn't it? That's the cliché. But in 2008 there were a number of trance producers who proved that the genre could evolve into new and exciting sounds, whilst still retaining the core element of trance that its followers find so intoxicating: hypnotism. German DJ Martin Roth did it better than most, and that's why he's our top trance artist of the year.
Beatportal’s Top 10 singles of 2008 Posted: 16 Dec 2008 10:15 AM CST Putting together a Top 10 singles of the year list reminds me of that old saying “opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.” And indeed, the Beatportal team debated long and hard about which tracks would make into our final Top 10 Singles list of 2008. We spent hours arguing over how the feature would take shape, like whether it would be the biggest club tracks of the year or the most influential electronic cuts of 2008. In the end, we decided to put something of a personal touch to our list. These singles aren’t necessarily the biggest club bangers of the year or the biggest sellers (because popularity doesn’t necessarily equate to greatness), but rather they are tracks that shaped our year at Beatportal, from artists whom we felt did really great things in 2008. We hope you enjoy these records as much as we do, and please feel free to express your support for, or indeed your disgust with, our choices, and don’t forget to add your own Top 10 in our comments section. After all, you have an asshole don’t you?

'Happy Birthday' coincides with the band's 15th December birthday, the day that Torbjorn Brundtland and Svein Berge came together with the idea of starting their double act. |
Berliners battle for Bar25’s survival Posted: 16 Dec 2008 03:58 AM CST Berlin's creative community has launched a last ditch attempt to fight the looming eviction of the city's nutty Bar25 venue, which has been a haven for techno afterparties and a meeting spot for electronic music fans for many years. The famous bar in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district is due to be bulldozed in a few weeks as part of a re-development of the area, which will see the banks of the Spree turned into some fancy new loft and offices. "We as creative citizens, artists and musicians consider this decision to be a rash and fatal one," argue some Bar25 fans in an online petition.
Posted: 15 Dec 2008 09:41 PM CST 23-year old Leeds-born, London-based Rusko does the honors for this week's Essential Mix, bringing a fittingly filthy set of basslines and grime to the table. Said to have turned the genre on its head with his high energy and adventurous combinations, Rusko made his mark with his hit 'Cockney Thug', which was caned across the board from the likes of Switch through to Pete Tong and Annie Mac. Here on Radio 1 Rusko shows us what he's got in this two hour mix, which includes Skream, Benga, Kid Sister, and Pendulum among its offerings.
‘Need2Soul Vol. 2’ to drop in February Posted: 15 Dec 2008 05:43 PM CST The honorable Benji B and Glen Underground [pictured] have taken it upon themselves to bring another installment in the housey 'Need2Soul' mix compilation series. What started as underground parties with nights hosted at such clubs as Fabric and most recently the End, has since turned its own label, inspired by all the unreleased material their DJs played. The first ‘Need2Soul’ album was compiled by house chiefs Ron Trent and Jerome Sydenham earlier this year, and this second installation doesn't disappoint as an upbeat and dancefloor friendly follow-up.
