Disco in 2008: Trend or transition?

The last 12 months have arguably belonged to disco. Yes, there was a resurgent deep house scene that muscled in on minimal’s four-four stranglehold, and of course dubstep continued its steady ascent into the electronic scene’s consciousness, but thanks to the entire shift in attitude it induced, it was the spinning ball of disco that shone above all else; a genre that changed the way music was played and partied to in 2008. In our exclusive feature, Beatportal's Kerri Mason investigates how this new incarnation of the sound is currently shaping up, gathering the impressions of long-time disco aficionados James Murphy and Tim Sweeney, and looks at how the scene emerged from the ashes of the 1979 Disco Demolition event to become a dominant musical force in the 21st century.

Aroma EP - Paul Brtschitsch and Cio D'or

Veteran engineer and head of Frisbee Paul Brtschitsch has already gained props this year for both his solo work and his collaborations with Mobilee's Anja Schneider, and now he's back alongside hotly-tipped techno femme Cio D'or. Combining his flair for dubbed out echoes and her pulsing melodic tendencies, 'Aroma EP' offers dancefloor boom and pastoral headiness in equal measure.

Glade festival needs a new home

The organisers behind the UK's dance festival Glade are currently scouring the country in search of a new home for their 2009 event, which they hope to run from 16th-19th July. Nick Ladd, Glade Festival's chief said, "Wasing has been a great home for us for our first five years, but as part of the natural evolution of Glade we have decided to find another beautiful bit of England, in particular somewhere where we can run it later on all nights including Sunday, and make some proper noise!"

America’s techno resurgence continues in New York

A while back Beatportal's Industry Boy profiled Los Angeles' rising techno scene with a feature called 'Los Angeles claims USA's dance music crown'. In the article Avalon's director of music Craig Edwards, who was the first superclub promoter in the US to book underground techno acts as headliners said, “People in San Francisco or Washington look at our line-ups, and even though they have no intention of going to the club, it definitely influences their musical tastes, even other promoters. “We took a risk which paid off, and now other promoters who were previously too scared to move away from big name trance and progressive DJs are hopefully being inspired.” Well, he was right.

Players - Anton Pieete

Anton Pieete 'Players' is one of the biggest techno records of the year, and it has been played by everyone from Adam Beyer to 2000 And One, Karotte and Richie Hawtin. The main groove of the track is absolutely devastating wherever it's been played, and the track is likely to make Anton Pieete one of the most in-demand techno remixers of 2009.

Bad - Kode 9, LD

This track is like cutting up and dissecting Kode 9’s brain; swirling around inside are his musical inspirations ranging from Detroit techno, late nineties garage, dubstep and deep house. Teaming up with LD on this latest Hyperdub release, Kode 9 has managed to spill the contents of his head onto this five minute track, which epitomises not only the new direction for his productions but also setting a new paradigm for the Hyperdub label.
