Posted: 10 Nov 2008 03:00 PM CST We were deeply saddened by the discontinuation of GigaStudio earlier this year, as its passing abandoned a lot of users who had invested heavily in the software. Clearly, Mark Of The Unicorn were saddened also. So much so that they've just unleashed a killer offer on their competing MachFive softsampler. And the offer isn't strictly for GigaStudio owners either.
Genrecast: Chill Out 07 - Beatport Posted: 10 Nov 2008 02:40 PM CST For this week's installment of the Chill Out Genrecast, we set it off with tracks from Chymera, Ohm Guru, Motorcitysoul, Model 500, Mobilee Records and more. Similar to the Beatport Burners, Genrecasts are enhanced podcasts featuring the best new releases linked directly for download from Beatport. The Genrecast is an 'enhanced' podcast, which means each track in the mix has a track mark and shows the release artwork, so when you listen to it in iTunes or on your iPod you'll be able to skip through tracks in the mix, see the cover art of each release and click through to Beatport to buy the release. It's the easiest way for DJs to do record shopping!
Posted: 10 Nov 2008 12:34 PM CST The piano stab: So easy to use, yet so hard to use well. Cuban-born, Frankfurt-based duo Einzelkind not only master the art on 'Out With A Bang', on Get Physical sub-label Kindisch, they even employ some other dangerous elements – vocal snippets used like percussion, filters, and a full-on piano riff – with style and grace.
Posted: 10 Nov 2008 08:45 AM CST Two months in and all is well. The ball appears to be moving firmly in the right direction for London's newest super club Matter; sell out shows and mainly glowing reports have characterised the south London venue's formative days in business. Now with attentions turning to end of year celebrations, the Greenwich venue have announced Belgium party starters 2 Many DJs as their headline act for NYE 2008.
Posted: 10 Nov 2008 03:16 AM CST Continuing on our quest to steal the records of the world's best DJs, this week's Weekend Weapons feature comes from UK DJ sensation Mark Knight, boss of Toolroom. Mark scored himself a bit of a worldwide smash during the summer with his tasteful update of Laurent Garnier's 'Man With The Red Face', and his Toolroom label has rocketed through the year by releasing in addition to the aforementioned Garnier remix, four more Toolroom Knights releases as well as the odd club-friendly banger. This past weekend Mark played at the Ministry of Sound Sessions party at Carling Academy in Oxford and then (gasp) took a well-earned night off on Saturday. Here's his big three.
Comptine D´un Autre Ete L. ‘Apre Midi - Jay Haze & Yann Tierson Posted: 09 Nov 2008 12:34 PM CST If you didn't know already, this is 'that one' from the charming French flick 'Amelie' - you know, the one with the twinkling pianos that plays regularly throughout the film as the doe-faced starlet bumbles about in Paris. While to some this Haze-ified rework will sound somewhat on the twee side, those with a weakness for pretty, plaintive melodies will be overjoyed to see that this is finally available on Beatport.
German techno DJs take on racism Posted: 08 Nov 2008 06:10 AM CST Electronic music has always had a unifying quality to it, and the inclusiveness of its parties can be argued to be socially beneficial with regards to building tolerance. Often though, this aspect of electronic music culture is forgotten in the waves of dismissal that authorities generally throw at youth culture movements. Not in Germany however, where a group of DJs are actually using dance music to combat racism.
Pete Tong Fast Trax 7th November 2008 Posted: 07 Nov 2008 09:52 PM CST On Fast Trax this week, Pete takes a look at the trailer for the new DVD from Justice called 'Across The Universe', due out on November 24th. Pete also highlights a new drum and bass track, 'Tear You Down' from The Brookes Brothers out this week on the Breakbeat Kaos label.

Dubfire on his Oliver Huntemann collaboration ‘Dios’ Posted: 07 Nov 2008 03:43 PM CST As one of the most talked about and successful techno artists of the last 18 months, Ali ‘Dubfire’ Shirazinia should have little to prove. But as we found out recently, the biggest and most vehement critic of his oft-discussed new techno direction, is himself. Taking his latest collaboration with Oliver Huntemann as a decent excuse for a catch up, we discussed the process behind the Hawtin, Dice and Väth supported track 'Dios' (check it in the player below), the theory behind his own SCI+TEC Digital Audio label, and the blood, sweat and tears that go into his productions.
Tech News Roundup: November 7, 2008 Posted: 07 Nov 2008 01:00 PM CST While all eyes and ears have been focused on the US elections, it’s been a quiet week for product announcements from the major manufacturers. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t any news on the technology front - in fact, there are several noteworthy goodies that all share this week’s theme... Free.
London: Interview with disco crew Loose Posted: 07 Nov 2008 10:33 AM CST A while back we did an interview with London party crew Disco Blood Bath, who at the time were playing gay disco music in a very loud purple basement. Now they've moved on up in the world to venues such as Fabric and The End. Those boys have sure grown up. We felt it was time once again to pull back the duvet of London's underground disco scene and climb into bed with a disco crew who aren't plying their trade at London’s mega clubs, but rather throwing parties in small quirky venues across the city. Beatportal shared a Bakewell tart and a pint with Paul Crognale and Chris Edwards aka Cred, the boys behind east London’s latest party sensation Loose, just in time for their party this weekend with Belgian duo Aeroplane.

Let Go / Lovin’ Feeling - Kandi & Neumann Posted: 07 Nov 2008 04:28 AM CST With all the electro-prog-tech-trance crossovers these days, categorising tracks into specific genres can often be tricky. But Kandi & Neumann’s ‘Let Go’ fits 100% into the trance box. Danish producers Daniel Kandi and Daniel Neumann have joined forces to release ‘Let Go’ and ‘Lovin’ Feeling’ as part of a double package on Anjunabeats.
Posted: 07 Nov 2008 03:53 AM CST One of the most exciting musical developments of 2008 was a newly revived Dutch underground techno movement, led by the heavy hitting loops of 2000 And One, the funky tech house of Lauhaus, the minimal grooves of Kabale Und Liebe and the stunning house of Aroy Dee. Unlike some of the formulaic bongo rhythms and ethnic vocals characterising the current deep house revival, Aroy Dee's approach to house music is more melancholic, misshapen and expansive in its sources.
Moon Song - They Came From The Stars (I Saw Them) Posted: 06 Nov 2008 06:36 PM CST For those of you who don’t know, They Came From The Stars (I Saw Them) are a psychedelic version of the Flaming Lips with additional helpings of acid. This interstellar cut has been treated to a more earthly reworking from the king of italo-disco re-edits, Serge Santiago.
Posted: 06 Nov 2008 03:45 PM CST By far the standout track from Evil’s zombie infested new album ‘They Live’, this track fuses the characteristic Evil Nine sound with the angsty lyrics of Def Jux head honco, El-P. A step up from ‘You Can Be Special Too’, the track holds the same rolling properties as previous hit ‘Crooked’, yet with more drops, synths, and an added potency behind the beats.
Posted: 06 Nov 2008 03:32 PM CST ‘We hope that you enjoy using Traktor and that it stimulates your creativity as a DJ’ reads the liner notes in the manual that comes with Traktor Pro, the new updated DJ software application from Native Instruments. With an arsenal of new FX, four fully-featured virtual decks, a slick new user interface and a new and improved browsing system creativity ain’t gonna be a problem with this one. Native Instruments believe they’ve created the most advanced digital DJ system on the planet. Beatportal decided to put their big claims to the test with an in-depth review.
Posted: 06 Nov 2008 12:04 PM CST Steve Bug's venerable Poker Flat imprint will reach its hundredth release later this month and have looked back to the heady days of acid house to mark the occasion. The D.H.S. classic 'The House of God‘ has been revived and re-imaged thanks mainly to the keen ear of Phonique. Bug heard his twisted take on the original and decided to garner it with the honour of PRF 100.
