Equilibrium - King Roc

Posted: 04 Nov 2008 09:19 PM CST

Conceptual dance music is a rare breed in today's 'churn them out and start the next one' disposable music world, but King Roc is here to fix that. Music made with a storyline, 'Equilibrium' (and his previous releases on Mutual Society) are future classics, with more in mind than obvious gimmicks simply used to gain chart placement.

Production Master Class: Hi-hats and top-loops

Posted: 04 Nov 2008 08:00 PM CST

In our previous roundtables on intros/outros and kick and bass, we laid the foundations for building a groove like the pros. This week, we’re going in the opposite direction – hi-hats and top loops – and taking a closer look at the trebly stuff. Shakers, hi-hats, tambourines and related high-frequency percussion parts add the jiggle and shimmy to a track. Franz Ferdinand ‘Ulysses’ remix competition

Posted: 04 Nov 2008 06:45 PM CST

Scottish indie dance group Franz Ferdinand has teamed up with Beatportal to challenge aspiring producers to remix a forthcoming track from their new album. But in a twist that the band hopes will lead to more unique and diverse remixes, the original of 'Ulysses' is not being made available to contestants as it will only be released in January. The idea is to create a hotpot of remixes that are not tainted by the direction and mood of the original version. Franz Ferdinand's lead vocalist Alex Kapranos told Beatportal that the band "want to be surprised by the geniuses out there that no one has heard of yet." As well as having their remix released on Domino Records, the winner will also receive 500€. Not bad. Click through for all the details.

To mark the passing of one of the finest UK labels in recent years, Bristol imprint Skull Disco have announced details of their forthcoming swansong compilation 'Soundboy's Gravestone Gets Desecrated By Vandals'. Acting mainly as an outlet for the works of Shackleton and Appleblim, the label has, without question, pushed the sonic envelope further than most in the last few years, brazenly blurring the boundaries between the worlds of dubstep, techno and beyond. CD1 of their round-up recalls releases SKULL006 to SKULL010 with the exception of Ricardo Villalobos' groundbreaking remix of Shakleton's 'Blood On My Hands' which appeared on the label's first compilation 'Soundboy Punishments'.

Jaydee 'Plastic Dreams', one of the biggest house anthems of all time, has been re-released on R&S. Trumpet fanfare please. It's pure jazz delight over dark repetitive tribal drums and listening to it today, it's amazing to think this beauty came out way back in 1992.
