Damian Lazarus: Devil Night tour diary entry #1 Posted: 28 Oct 2008 10:46 PM CDT In a further Beatportal exclusive, we have secured the literary services of Crosstown Rebels boss Damian Lazarus as he embarks on his ominously named Devil Night tour across North America. As you will be see below, Damian's former career as a Sun newspaper journalist in the UK becomes abundantly clear in this, his first hilariously honest diary post.
Haunted House Of Horror - Jacob London and Big Hair Posted: 28 Oct 2008 09:49 PM CDT Tucked away in the typically dark and abandoned back catalog on Beatport resides a 'Haunted House of Horror.' This is the perfect Halloween record for tech house troublemakers. It's a release that captures the true essence of Halloween with a slight touch of funky playfulness. A secret weapon designed for those who want to do something much more creative than playing Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' for the 10th year in a row.
Steve Lawler’s mobile Viva studio Posted: 28 Oct 2008 09:28 PM CDT From these photos you’d imagine Steve Lawler and Audiofly to be sitting in a posh music studio in London, but we are in fact on a tour bus traveling through the Arizona desert at about 50mph.
Posted: 28 Oct 2008 08:00 PM CDT Back around the turn of the century, the Koblo Vibra2000 was one of the first softsynths to actually emulate the sound of an analog synth. Well, after a several year hiatus, Koblo has returned and so has the Vibra. For its latest incarnation, the developers have remained faithful to the original’s streamlined feature set, though the plug-in includes an updated interface that’s a bit easier to grasp than the original.
Christian Smith: The art of big room noise Posted: 28 Oct 2008 06:33 PM CDT Over in London from his permanent base in Sao Paulo, we caught up with Christian Smith to gain an in depth insight into the production process behind his ‘big room’ sound, his relationship with long-time collaborator John Selway and his thoughts on the oft-discussed 'minimal bandwagon'... Christian Smith & John Selway’s 'Total Departure' has been causing a ‘moment’ on dance floors worldwide since its release at the beginning of the May. Simple, but stunning in its efficiency, the track embodied the sound that as producers Smith and Selway had been threatening for over ten years. Equally as adept to releasing solo these days, Smith swiftly followed up with ‘Flyertalk/Friendly Skies’ for Bedrock Records; a track markedly removed from the sound of ‘Total Departure’ but no less stunning.
Mr Oizo to release new album through Ed Banger Posted: 28 Oct 2008 05:12 PM CDT French electro wonk-star Mr. Oizo is set to release his latest LP 'Lambs Anger' through Ed Banger Records. Most immediately famed for 'Flat Beat', his Levis commercial featured track, new album 'Lambs Anger' follows on from 'Moustache Half a Scissor' in 2005 and 'Last Night A DJ Killed My Dog' both for Laurent Garnier's F Comm label. His relationship with Ed Banger can be traced back to last year when his releases for the label fell nicely in line with the colliding worlds of indie and electro-leaning dance music, or indie dance as it is affectionately known by 'the kids'.
Posted: 28 Oct 2008 11:40 AM CDT He’s been DJing for the last 12 years, he co-founded the music download website Trackitdown and went on to manage Intec Records for Carl Cox, but this year it’s really begun to kick off big-time for Jon Rundell with his killer remix of Devilfish's 'Manalive' topping Beatport's techno chart for six weeks and reaching #2 in the main chart. Beatportal caught up with him to talk Paul van Dyk, heroes and strange gigs.
Catching up with M.A.N.D.Y. on tour Posted: 28 Oct 2008 04:51 AM CDT Check out these videos of Get Physical's M.A.N.D.Y. while on what appears to be a tour riddled with plenty of shenanigans. Watch as Philipp gets chatted up by Beta's go-go dancers and a sassing from a rhinestone-clad drag queen in Vancouver. And you can be the judge as to whether or not he can successfully sport a fake moustache while at the San Francisco Moustache Club. There's a slide show, too, after the jump!
Mixed In Key Version 4 announced Posted: 28 Oct 2008 02:00 AM CDT The latest version of Mixed In Key was announced today. For those who are new to Mixed In Key, it’s a software tool that detects the key, pitch and harmonic information in a track – allowing DJs to catalog their tracks musically, rather than simple BPM info. Celebrity users of Mixed In Key include Pete Tong, Dubfire, Kaskade and BT. In addition to the new features (covered after the jump), version 4 comes in two flavors: Original and a XONE-specific version for Allen & Heath customers.
Requiem - Oliver Moldan and Norman Zube Posted: 27 Oct 2008 10:31 PM CDT Oliver Moldan’s impressive catalogue of releases speaks for itself, having appeared on an endless number of imprints in all regions of the globe over the last several years. Audio Therapy however, has been somewhat of a spiritual home, and he returns to the label once more, teaming up with occasional collaborator and Parquet Recordings wonder boy Norman Zube for the single ‘Requiem’.

The library features 200 synthesizer presets based on Massive’s sound engine, which has become quite popular with producers thanks to its hard-edged character and extensive modulation options. |
Genrecast: Chill Out 06 - Beatport Posted: 27 Oct 2008 08:00 PM CDT For this week's installment of the Chill Out Genrecast, we set it off with tracks from Kevin Yost, Mirror Music, Popnoname, Compost, Minimalizm and more. Similar to the Beatport Burners, Genrecasts are enhanced podcasts featuring the best new releases linked directly for download from Beatport. The Genrecast is an 'enhanced' podcast, which means each track in the mix has a track mark and shows the release artwork, so when you listen to it in iTunes or on your iPod you'll be able to skip through tracks in the mix, see the cover art of each release and click through to Beatport to buy the release. It's the easiest way for DJs to do record shopping!
Posted: 27 Oct 2008 05:54 PM CDT Pete Tong is currently on tour in North America, and being the ambassador of dance music that he is, he's running his very own Simon Cowell-type talent search called Tong Factor. The concept is simple enough - come down to one of his gigs in the next couple of weeks and hand him your demos on a CD or USB stick. Pete will then listen to every single demo submitted to him, and he'll release the best ones on a brand new digital label on Beatport after his tour. Where is Pete Tong playing next? Read on to find out!

Lawler and Audiofly take on San Francisco’s Harlot Posted: 27 Oct 2008 12:46 PM CDT 11.42pm Steve Lawler, manager Dave and a small entourage of San Francisco friends enter a backstreet glosser known as the Harlot. It’s a plush kinda place, with a tightly designed interior that’s part goth, part hunting lodge. “It’s a shame you couldn’t see the warehouse,” says one of the entourage as we walk towards the DJ booth. Tonight’s party was supposed to be at a secret location, an illegal warehouse, but last week the cops busted the joint.
Posted: 27 Oct 2008 10:33 AM CDT Weekend Weapons is our new weekly feature in which we hassle the world's DJ'ing elite into revealing a trio of tracks that were an indispensable part of their weekend maneuvers. This week's recruit is Minus' prince of darkness Troy Pierce whose gigs saw him deployed in Bucharest at Kristal Club on Friday, and link up with his Minus cohorts on Saturday in Amsterdam for the massive Contakt party at The Sand. Over to Troy...
Viva Tour rolls into San Francisco. Just. Posted: 27 Oct 2008 07:16 AM CDT Stepping onto the Viva tour bus today in a parking lot in downtown San Francisco, felt like walking into an after after party in the last stages of a wind down. Anthony from Audiofly was hunched over in a corner smoking; peering into the distance at an imaginary mirage, that no doubt promised some sort of nourishment. “I need food. Where’s the food man?” he muttered. Steve Lawler and the other Audiofly Luca wandered into the front cabin wearing neon sunglasses, their gaunt faces displaying days of cyclical excess and strain. The circle of life for these men recently has been like a video of an explosion, that you rewind to watch over and over again.
