| ‘Sky and Sand’ - Paul Kalkbrenner Posted: 08 Oct 2008 09:49 PM CDT It's been appearing in Paul Kalkbrenner's live sets for a while, and now this melodic techno anthem is finally available on Beatport as part of the soundtrack for the much-anticipated movie 'Berlin Calling'. The lyrics were written and sung by Paul's younger brother Fritz Kalkbrenner, giving the track a melancholy sweetness that will surely make it the biggest hit spawned by the film. Starting this month, we’ll be polling Beatport artists and producers on their approaches to various production techniques and reporting their answers in roundtable format. As artists, we all have our own preferences and philosophies that comprise our sound, and those philosophies are what makes each artist unique - and to some DJs and audiences, even inspirational. | Posted: 08 Oct 2008 04:55 PM CDT Coachella festival has set the benchmark high for US-based music festivals - when Beatportal checked out the 2008 edition, we were knocked sideways by how clean it was, how well organised it was, and by how bad ass the sound and lighting were on the different stages. The main stage even had surround sound, which they utilised just for Roger Waters (from Pink Floyd) set. The organisers of Coachella had this clever plastic bottle collection system whereby attendees who picked up 10 plastic bottles and delivered them to a recycling point were given a free bottle of water. The result was a trash-free festival ground. |

| Posted: 08 Oct 2008 03:03 AM CDT If you're into high brow electronic music composition, Mnml ssgs have a Q&A with New York's Ezekiel Honig, a producer who takes reference from musique concrete and people like John Cage. "I don’t consider using electronic sounds (synths, drum machines, etc.) because there is so much interesting sound in the world already, and it’s impossible to run out of material when you think of it in that way," said Ezekiel Honig, who runs the labels Microcosm and Anticipate. Ezekiel Honig's 'Scattered Practices' album from 2006 sums up his idiosyncratic flourishes with sonic forging - check it in the player after the jump. |
