News | Global Gathering: The Proof that Trance Music is alive and well!

Posted: 29 Jul 2008 07:41 PM CDT

At the UK’s Global Gathering event last weekend, the Godskitchen Arena (Europe’s largest festival tent) was as it usually is; packed out throughout the whole of the weekend. Most of the people we asked said they had gone to the festival to see the trance headliners and all of the music we heard being played on iPod docking stations around the campsite was trance (mainly Sander van Doorn), with the exception of some Deadmau5 (even his records often contain some trance-like qualities).

Posted: 29 Jul 2008 06:05 PM CDT

He may be a staunch vinyl supporter when he DJs, but Kompakt supremo Michael Mayer has finally decided it's time to share the love with his first ever chart on Beatport. Laudably, his selection isn't full of tracks from his own labels, and covers the full range of his eclectic, pop-tinged style.

News | Clubbers’ dancing powers club’s electricity

Posted: 29 Jul 2008 04:36 PM CDT

Whilst the world has become more conscious about climate change and global warming, the electronic music community has remained comparatively silent about its contribution to energy conservation. A few high profile DJs have pledged their support for carbon offsetting schemes including Richie Hawtin and trance trio Above & Beyond (no doubt the moral incentive was guilt for taking so many flights each year to gigs), but precious little has been done on the nightclub front. Until now. The opening of Surya nightclub in London last month marks a bold new era in environmental responsibility.

News | Top Track: KU BO ‘Turnerment feat. Fefe MC’

Posted: 29 Jul 2008 11:10 AM CDT

When the night starts to turn towards dawn the music should too, if a DJ has any chance of keeping clubbers moving beyond what is thought to be humanly possible. For me, this has always meant groovy, wacky house or techno with dreamy pads floating over the top. The pads on KU BO 'Turnerment feat. Fefe MC' are perfect for those hazy 6 AM moments when the sun begins to rise to reveal the dirty, cigarette-butt covered floor of a party in exodus.

News | Album Recommendation: Efdemin

Posted: 29 Jul 2008 04:29 AM CDT

Having returned last weekend from playing Melt festival, this Friday Efdemin graced the decks at Watergate in Berlin downstairs while Paco Osuna played upstairs. Efdemin filled us in at the club with all of the happenings of his last very impressive year. In 2007 Efdemin released his self-titled first full-length, which was touted as Album of the Year by Grooves Magazine, and he also put out several remixes on Dessous, Bpitch, Morris Audio, Aus! and Brut! And, now he is in the process of test pressing an upcoming Dial 12” which will feature a track by his original deep house music moniker, "Phillip Sollmann". He says the sound on his full-length was the product of a logical progression from his more abstract house sound (in the vein of Theo Parrish) into what it is today - a combination of more club-friendly deep house, Detroit techno, and minimal.
