News | The changing tide of Ibiza’s Bora Bora

Posted: 24 Jun 2008 10:47 PM CDT

To most people, Ibiza is just an island in the Mediterranean. For me, it's always represented one of society's most cherished beliefs - freedom. The freedom, that is, to be hedonistic. Hedonism is a pursuit or devotion to pleasure and at the core of dance music culture is a belief that we as humans have the right to please our senses, to feel good. Dancing is pleasurable. So, too, is listening to good music, DJing, eating nice food, lying on a beach, having sex and taking drugs. It's impossible to deny that these things aren't pleasurable, but the legality of say, something like drugs, is relative. In the past, Ibiza has steered well clear of the murky world of relative morality and that's what has made the island so attractive to the hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit it every year. But now, it's illegal to dance on a table in Ibiza as I just found out at Bora Bora Beach Bar in Playa D'en Bossa.

News | Event Review: Sonem Sundays in New York

Posted: 24 Jun 2008 10:02 PM CDT

Sonem Sundays, a free new monthly event, started with Experimental Sunday 001 this week at Bar 13 in New York. As a tribute to techno, the event is a daytime and early evening gathering on the new rooftop patio bar, complete with a barbeque, turntables, some peripheral seating and a view of the surrounding tall buildings in the middle of the city. Nestled next to Union Square’s lively area, Bar 13 had hot dogs, frozen margaritas in slushy machines and a wonderful vibe. Eric and Taimur’s set was full of minimal and melodic techno tracks, including one in particular, Aril Brikha's Groove La Chord, that they dropped which had everyone with hands in the air dancing.

Music Reviews | ‘Redemption’ - Sophie Sugar

Posted: 24 Jun 2008 05:34 PM CDT

‘Uplifting and emotional’ is how rising UK trance star Sophie Sugar describes her music, and if you like driving, euphoric trance, chances are you’ll like ‘Redemption’. As a producer, Sophie’s all about the melody – she writes the melody first and bases the track around it – but it’s the bouncing bass line that stands out with ‘Redemption’.

I think she said her name was Francesca but I couldn't hear properly over the booming techno of Amnesia's main room. As one of Amnesia's many dancers, this Chilean girl will spend her summer nights in Ibiza dancing until the early hours seven days a week.

News | Organic music served up proper, by Mathias Kaden

Posted: 24 Jun 2008 11:03 AM CDT

If you’re a fan of organic sounding minimal techno with a large dose of percussion then you’ll be eagerly awaiting the next release to come out by Mathias Kaden in the next year on his label, Vakant. This is not fast food style, disposable empty calorie music, but instead it’s nutritious and long-lasting. In addition to his stellar and well-thought out productions, Kaden also has the admirable skill of creating good vibes wherever and whenever he puts his creative energy behind the turntables. During Mutek festival Mathias Kaden gave people a reason to take notice of his productions. He and Onur Özer tag-teamed outdoors on a rainy day and, despite the more than dreary weather, got the crowd into the mood of festivity. In the auditory memory of many people, the deep impression of Mathias Kaden’s sound has lasted.
